Orange Western Africa Region by SoaringAven Orange Western Africa Region by SoaringAven
My entry for the Telephone Map Game: 2017 Edition 2

The basis of this game is that someone makes a map, which is passed onto you and you must make a map that derives from it with no other information than that map. This then gets repeated for however many players are in the game. At the end, all the maps were published here: althistoria.proboards.com/thre…

As usual, I learned *so much* about the countries and people I created the AH for. That's one of the things I love about this genre. :)

There is no massive story behind it, rather I tried to piece together what had happened in the previous map and then decided to throw in some brutal civil war and ethnic cleansing. The Orange Western Africa Union was probably a federation of former Dutch colonies. The Union didn't last long as vast ethnic differences made themselves felt. It quickly became dominated by the Kwa or Guinean people group, an ethno-linguistic family of peoples living along the coast and around the capital city, numbering several tens of millions and predominantly protestant. The power was concentrated within the hands of several of their prominent families causing strong resentment by various ethnic factions within the country. When the federation began to crumble, it was these factions which formed the cores of the separate states. The war was surprisingly free of great-power meddling as, after a few tentative attempts at the start, the violent and blood-streaked brutality made both sides quickly wash their hands of it.

Upper Volta - Cisnigeria:
A highly volatile state with a population of around 5 million at independence, mostly concentrated around the Central Bantoid people family. They were the first to declare independence and thus also received the worst beating from the brutal war that ensued. Not much better in its structure than the original OWA Union, the country is sprinkled with pockets of other smaller ethnicities, too small to really complain, and ruled by an alliance of clans and families which distribute various government functions among themselves while including various elements of Islamic law in that of the state. The local Christian (mainly protestant) population was the first to flee followed by the various Kwa peoples as the UV-C government began a brutal retribution campaign for the atrocities being committed by the Union government units further south.

Sahel:
The Sahel is a close friend and ally to UV-C. They were the second state to declare independence and while the OWAU armies were slowly slaughtering their way north through the breakaway UV-C, their militias dealt it a painful blow from the north-east. The territory of The Sahel has a high population but few cities. The main people group of the nation is a dual mix of the Hausa and Fulani people, together numbering in the tens of millions. Due to a history of tribal merging between the two, the Sahel was more willing to compromise when it comes to minorities. Thus the country has two autonomous areas for the populous Zarma and Kanuri people and is considered one of the few democracies to rise from the ashes left after the fall of the European colonial empires. The alliance they have with UV-C is one of pragmatism more than shared values. The fear of the Union government was greater than that of the UV-C's regime, even if it's a bit of a dark stain on their otherwise relatively clean reputation. The country's oil industry keeps the democracy running smoothly even though the country is so ethnically and religiously divided. Muslims make up around 60% of the country with protestants most of the remaining 40%. The occupied Kwa-inhabited territories make up for a large chunk of the protestants and any cases of ethnic violence are more of a result of suppressed Kwa uprisings than any systematic government repression. This land makes up for the second blot on Sahel's clean sheet as the UN is pushing them to either return it to the OWAU or create a third autonomous region.

Coffee Coast:
The Coffee Coast Republic was the third state to leave the Union. It didn't break away in ethnic borders but rather declared independence within the borders of the Coffee Coast state along with the name. The region was one of the least controlled by the OWAU government and was de facto independent for a few years. Mostly populated by the Bantu people, a vast ethno-linguistic people group covering most of southern Africa, it had a population rivaling that of the ruling Kwa. The separation was a clean process, legally flawless as it was merely a state leaving the Union while the Union government was too busy dealing with the uprisings in the north. However while the Kwa-controlled government was too busy to pay them proper attention, it also refused to acknowledge their independence. The general mood in New Amsterdam of Africa was "We deal with the north first, then it's your turn". The Bantus waited for no such thing and promptly invaded the OWAU government lands from the south, occupying the western portion of what remained of New Friesland and setting up a puppet state on the basis of a West Bantu nationality. The Union government forces were stretched too thin to deal with such a tide from the south and the two countries quietly signed a peace treaty, giving the Coffee Coast recognition and keeping the West Bantu state between them as a buffer. The country is predominantly protestant and more interested in exerting its powers southwards on the various kin-inhabited post-colonial states while rapidly developing their large oil production potential than on OWAU matters. As such they keep the West Bantus supplied but not much else.

West Bantu:
The West Bantu Republic, as mentioned before, is a puppet state created by the Coffee Coast. Contrary to its name, the West Bantu people group make up only the slightest of majorities, with massive Igbo (Kwa) and Fulfulde (Fulani) minorities. It's a poor state mainly kept breathing thanks to Coffee Coast support, constantly weary of the OWAU and the large minorities. Otherwise the country is a shambles with a mixed protestant-Muslim population. The country's main product is oil, run jointly by Coffee Coast and New Limburg companies. These plants provide the bastions of government control while the rest is often de facto lawless. Should the war end, the state's independence is in question. Without Coffee Coast support, it is likely to quickly disintegrate.

New Limburg:
Formerly a French colony, New Limburg had the highest concentration of Europeans of the entire OWAU, with the French and Dutch together making up for almost 30% of the population. This can also be seen in their religious makeup as over 85% of the country is either protestant or Catholic. They are the industrial heart of the old Union and today run most of the OWAU remnants' oil industry. With a population formed mostly of Europeans and Mandae, New Limburg had absolutely no interest in taking part in the war that was rocking the rest of the country and promptly made the central government aware of the fact, stationing their militia at the border and ending all transport of vitally needed war material to the central government. After some speedy and quiet negotiations, these resumed while the borders were redrawn to better reflect the ethnic makeup of the state and the OWAU's oil production was put into New Limburger hands. This has been a great boon to their economy as the country is relatively rich in minerals but lacking in oil. Since then, New Limburg was de facto independent and over the following years, it gained greater and de jure autonomy. To distance itself from the conflict, New Limburg declared formal independence just a few months before the UN intervention within the OWAU. Though appearing as a prosperous democracy, the state is an oligarchy run by a shadow council of African-European companies and Mandae tribal heads. Lately they have been subjected to some very uncomfortable questioning in the UN after it was found, that the material that they provided for the OWAU may have included chemical and biological weapons.

Orange Western Africa Union:
The OWAU is a rump state of the former Union, consisting of parts of just three of the former states. Strong in population, industry and oil, it had the added advantage of holding the reigns of central power when the war started. Though some regiments dissolved into anarchy when their respective peoples declared independence, most were formed of those loyal to the Kwa government and well equipped to boot. When UV-C declared independence, they immediately began burning and slaughtering their way north against the less populous and worse equipped militias and guerrilla units of the new state. It seemed a rather one-sided war until The Sahel declared independence themselves and made a massive push into the OWAU heartland. One victory after another made them approach the outskirts of New Amsterdam of Africa and threatened to cut the OWAU in half before the government forces could push the Sahelians back. Faced with this massive setback and the added pressure of loosing the Coffee Coast and New Limburg, the war turned into a quagmire. Government forces units fighting stiff guerrilla resistance in the UV-C southern regions on one hand and a urban meat-grinder conflict within the highly disputed cities of Maryabourg and Akan. The OWAU received several warnings from the UN over the years and some form of an armistice was reached only once warships under the UN flag appeared off the coast of New Amsterdam of Africa. Today the UN has various peace-keeping programs in both UV-C and the OWAU and holds the two contested cities under direct administration. It still has its hands full as ethnic violence continues on a daily basis and both sides constantly make sorties against each other. The state is predominantly protestant with some Muslim minorities in the north and in major cities. While strong in both population and industry, it relies on New Limburg to run the oil production. Terrorism is a daily reality while the bloody business of the army in the northern regions are painted over with war propaganda. Though the country considers itself a direct successor of the OWUA due to legal continuity, the international community refused to award it the OWUA's seat in the UN. The country still retains the federal system though over 2/3 of the national parliament's seats aren't occupied while the few members that could be scraped together to represent the electoral districts now within Sahel and UV-C are put into place through impromptu elections held among the refugees. The official UN-designated name for the country is the Orange Western Africa or Western Africa for short though "The Union" has become a term widely used in the media when referring to the atrocities committed by the state.

And that's all folks. If anybody is interested, the map originally looked something like this: Old_version_OWUA
