The Coastal Republic of Trieste was created after the Second World War to prevent a conflict over the area between Italy and Yugoslavia. Just as it serves to stop one conflict, the country itself is constantly in turmoil between the German and Italian population of the cities and the Slovenian and Croatian countryside. The US TRUST (TRieste United States Troops) stationed here are doing all they can to keep them from each others throats. Things are expected to calm down when the Marshal plan kicks in and the economical situation improves.
The name is derived from the name of the region under the Habsburgs: Austrian Litorale. Litorale is another word for a coastal region apparently. The more you know.

Made for the alternatehistory.com contest where we were to create a buffer state. I'd been wracking my brains for an idea ever since I found out about it. I'd given up on it when my brain decides to come up with an idea . . . 17 minutes before midnight, the the day of the deadline. So I spent the entire night making this just so that I could post it before the deadline (The moment the vote is posted).  ^_^ So it's a little rushed . . .
I think I need sleep . . .

Just a quick question: what kind of software did you use? I'm interested in using that kind of line for the borders of the map I'm working on and I have no clue.

Well it's just astounding what you can make with Inkscape if you know what you're doing. I guess I have much to learn then. Thanks for the answer and keep up the excellent work.

You speak of a German minority, but where would  this one be located and as a result of what event did they come to this free state? Did the Italians invite them during the fascist rule to compensate for the Slavic minority? Just interested in the backstory behind this lovely piece of mappery. ^^

since Trieste was the main port for Austria proper (Austrian Litoral - Austrian Coast) and lots of Austrian goods went through there, imperial ships docked there and with Austrian bureaucracy, an influx of Germans over the centuries was unavoidable ;)

So where would the main German populations be located? In Trieste? And other main cities? Monfalcone, Pola, Fiume? And in total for how much of the population would the Germans account? More than one percent? ^^

Personally I imagine in large administrative-center cities and coastal towns as they would have moved there from the Austrian provinces of A-H to work as bureaucrats, in administration or to work in the naval and shipping industry. As to how large a chunk of the population they would make I can't really say o_O

not sure how they feel today - most seem to be happy to be Croatians, though Istria got a very different history to Croatia
